Governor Awards $18 Million for Parks and Preservation

November 18, 2002

119 Projects Supported Across the State

Governor George E. Pataki today announced $18,353,904 in Environmental Protection Fund (EPF), Clean Water/Clean Air Bond Act, and Greenway grants for 119 open space, recreation and historic preservation projects in 42 counties across the State. The projects include the acquisition of land, the creation of outdoor recreation facilities, the development of parklands and waterfronts and restorations to historic properties.

"These project awards underscore our strong commitment to increasing green space, developing new parklands, enhancing outdoor recreation opportunities and preserving our State's heritage," Governor Pataki said. "Whether it's creating new park facilities, improving waterfront access or restoring historic landmarks, these grants will continue to improve the quality of life for communities throughout New York State."

State Parks Commissioner Bernadette Castro said, "I am grateful to Governor Pataki for his leadership and continued support of the Environmental Protection Fund and the Clean Water/Clean Air Bond Act. Thanks to these valuable investments, the enhancement, expansion and renewal of waterfronts, parklands and historic resources across New York will serve the environmental and recreational interests of residents and visitors for years to come."

Carmella R. Mantello, Executive Director of the Hudson River Valley Greenway and Co-Director of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area said, "The grant funding announced today will help fulfill Governor Pataki's and the Greenway's goal of protecting and preserving the unique cultural, heritage and architectural assets of the Hudson River Valley. The investments we make in our communities today, by building recreational trails, revitalizing main streets, and restoring historic sites, will reap untold benefits for future generations, who will not only learn the story of the Valley's past, but will also realize future benefits in tourism and improved economic activity."

Since 1995, Governor Pataki has committed $107.7 million in Environmental Protection Fund, Clean Water/Clean Air Bond Act and federal Land and Water Conservation Fund support toward 906 open space, recreation and historic preservation sites throughout New York State.
