Town Board unanimously votes to bond for $6 million to complete the first phase of construction of the Montauk Playhouse Community Center.

On Tuesday, October 7, 2003, members of the Town Board showed unanimous support for restoring the Montauk Playhouse. Phase I will establish a well-needed Human Services Center in Montauk by voting to bond for $6 million to restore the historic structure, a Carl Fisher Tudor located next to the Montauk Firehouse on Flamingo Road.

Preliminary plans for the first phase of the structure, developed by Island Structures Engineering, call for

· a child day care center that will accommodate up to 90 children between the ages of 6 weeks and 4 years;
· a senior nutrition center that will serve up to 80 seniors daily;
· an adult day care center that will accommodate up to 12 to 15 adults with special needs;
· and youth and adult lounges.

Additional Phase I improvements would include a Recreation Center with a high-school regulation sized gymnasium, locker rooms, fitness center, youth room, cantina, and storage space; and a glass roof bay reminiscent of the original Carl Fisher design.

All of the above facilities and services (including the Recreation Center) would be located in roughly half of the building. Future plans call for a natatorium with lap and recreation pools and a theater to be located in the second half of the building.
