Join Montauk Youth on Sunday, January 17, from 1 to 4pm in the Montauk Playhouse Gymnasium as they unveil their new batting cage!
Through a generous grant from County Legislator Jay Scheiderman, Montauk Youth was able to purchase a batting cage and pitching machine for the gymnasium at the Montauk Playhouse. This project, which is a collaborative effort between Montauk Youth, the Parks and Recreation Department of the Town of East Hampton, and Legislator Jay Schneiderman, has been in the works for some time.
Legislator Schneiderman, as well as members of the press, will be on hand Sunday, January 17 for the unveiling. Come on down between 1 and 4pm to test your batting skills – and, bring your mitt. Let’s get ready for the spring baseball and softball season.
The batting cage will be available for public use most Sundays from 1 to 4pm. Note that due to liability concerns, only batters ages 8 and above may participate. For those that cannot get in the cage to bat, half of the gym will be open at those times for basketball, volleyball, or other recreation.
According to Maureen Rutkowski, President of Montauk Youth,
“We are thrilled to be able to finally unveil the batting cage to the public. This is a great example of how several entities can come together to help fulfill the needs of our community, especially our youth. Montauk Youth’s mission is to provide affordable cultural and recreational opportunities for our youth, and working in conjunction with the management at the Montauk Playhouse Community Center to develop programming and establish open gym use has helped us greatly in fulfilling that mission.
The batting cage and pitching machine are an addition to tumbling mats purchased by Montauk Youth in 2007 with an earlier grant from Suffolk County and made available for community use.
